Background of the Hospital
Dr. Bogalech Gebre Memorial General Hospital is situated in Kembata Zone which is found in Central Ethiopia Region, approximately 290 kilometers from Addis Abeba. The hospital is stablished in 1998 E.C. in Durame town serving a population of over 3.5 million people from the zone and surrounding areas.
The hospital provides a wide range of medical services, including surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, dermatology, ophthalmology, ICU, NICU, physiotherapy and so on. These services are supported by the necessary diagnostics for both inpatient and outpatient care.
Formerly named Durame General Hospital, however, the facility is later renamed in honor of Dr. Bogalech Gebre following her death. Dr. Bogalech was renowned for her efforts in combating female genital mutilation, a practice that was once widespread in many regions of Ethiopia. Through her advocacy and awareness campaigns, she played a significant role in reducing this harmful tradition.
The hospital has a dedicated team of 550 professionals, including specialists of diferrent diciplines, general practitioners, other health professionals and administrative staff. Despite challenges such as material shortages and limited service areas, the hospital remains committed to providing high-quality care to the community it serves, operating 24/7 to meet the needs of its patients.
